BEVAÒ ADHESIVES

BevaÒ 371 Solution
BEVAÒ 371 Solution was developed by Gustav A. Berger in 1970. Solids make up 40% (by weight) of the adhesive solution and are comprised of the following components: Ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (Elvax 150), Cyclohexanone resin (Lapropal K80), Ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (A-C copolymer), Phthalate ester of hydroabietyl alcohol (Cellolyn 21), and Petrolatum (Paraffin). Solvents make up 60% of the solution which is a combination of Toluene and Naphtha.

BEVA 371 Solution is especially useful for relining paintings and can be applied by brush, roller or sprayed to almost any surface. For most applications, the solution (more like a gel at room Temperature) should be reduced by equal amounts of naphtha or xylene. Complete instructions come with each can.

BEVA 371 Solution can be removed from absorbent surfaces by using hexane or acetone, provided these solvents do not damage the art work involved. These solvents do not dissolve the adhesive but merely swell it, and therefore don’t contaminate or stain absorbent materials.

BevaÒ 371 Film
BEVAÒ 371 Film is made of pure BEVA 371 Solution. The adhesive film comes sandwiched between two sheets of silicone-coated Mylar release film. The BEVA 371 Film and its Mylar release sheets are completely transparent and dimensionally stable. The transparent support allows the film to be cut precisely to any shape, and to place it exactly where desired. This is particularly useful in the consolidation of collages and sensitive materials.

BEVA 371 Film is solvent free and does not adhere to anything before it is activated with either heat or solvents. It can be inserted into loose areas, and delaminating paint can be properly aligned while the adhesive is inactive. The adhesive can then be activated with a hot air gun, tacking iron or vacuum heat table at a temperature of 150° F or 65° C. The hot air gun technique eliminates any staining and is least harmful to the texture of the painted surface.

BEVA 371 Film can be removed from absorbent surfaces by using hexane or acetone, provided these solvents do not damage the art work involved. These solvents do not dissolve the film but merely swell it and therefore don’t contaminate or stain absorbent materials.

BEVA 371 Film is available in rolls 27" and 54" wide and 20’ long (69 cm x 610 cm) in two different thickness. The standard 2.5 ml film is ideally suited for transparent linings on paintings such as Mylar and Lexan. The 1.0 ml film is equally useful for paper conservators where it is desirable to use a thinner layer of adhesive such as with works of art on paper. Since it is not a liquid, it can be applied to small, clearly defined areas without fear of spreading.

BevaÒ 371 Dry Resin Mix

BEVAÒ 371 Dry Resin Mix is the same product as BEVA 371 Solution but without the flammable solvents. The dry mix comes in two containers, Part A and Part B. The two are prepared separately in a double boiler with toluene and benzine, and then combined into one solution. This is a great product for traveling when solvent solutions are not permitted. You will need to purchase the needed solvents when you reach your destination. To make one gallon of solution you will need 1000g of Toluene and 800g of Benzine (naphtha). The dry resin mix comes with complete instruction.

BevaÒ Gel

BEVAÒ GEL is an aqueous dispersion of ethylene vinyl acetate and acrylic resins in a solution of water-soluble cellulose materials. In its pure form, or diluted with water, BEVA GEL is an excellent water-based adhesive dispersion, easy to apply by brush, roller or spray, with good slip and adhesion to a very wide range of surfaces. It is especially useful for cold lining of paintings and remounting of murals to a wide variety of lining materials and substrates.

BevaÒ D-8

BEVAÒ D-8 is an aqueous, non-ionic dispersion which consists mainly of an ethylene vinyl acetate emulsified by a volatile material which evaporates during drying, without leaving a residue. Application in dispersion permits the use of resins of still higher viscosity and greater flexibility than BEVA 371. However, BEVA D-8 requires more aromatic mixtures for removal than BEVA 371. Since it is an emulsion, it is sensitive to freezing, and should be stored with this in mind.

Lascaux Restauro

Lascaux Acrylic Adhesive 360 & 498

Lascaux Acrylic Adhesives 360 HV and 498 HV are thermoplastic copolymer butyl-methacrylate dispersions thickened with acrylic butyl-ester. Lascaux Acrylic Adhesive 498-20X is the same thermoplastic copolymer butyl-methacrylate dispersion, however it is thickened with 20% xylene. They are all water-thinnable, but insoluble in water after drying. Once dry they are permanently soluble in acetone, toluene and xylene, but insoluble in White Spirit, VM & P Naphtha.

Lascaux Acrylic adhesive 360 hv is extremely elastic. The dry film remains permanently tacky, and can be used as a contact adhesive when doing hot-sealing linings.

Lascaux Acrylic adhesive 498 hv has a strong elongation at break. It is a somewhat harder and not as tacky as Lascaux 360 HV. It is suitable for wet and dry applications (reactivation with solvents). This is the standard type for linings.

Lascaux Acrylic adhesive 498-20X is especially suited for strip-lining.

Additional application information is available upon request.

Starch adhesives

Natural Starches

Natural starches come in many different forms. Starches make an excellent water soluble adhesive-paste for bookbinding, hinging prints and repairing works of art on paper. The strength and physical properties of starch adhesives can be modified by there blending with PVA, PVOH and Methocel A4CP adhesives. If needed, pH levels can be adjusted by the addition (3-5% by weight) of precipitated calcium carbonate. Any modifications must be done after the starch is cooked.

Cooking of starches to form paste can be done in either a microwave in a deep bowl or on a hot plate in a double boiler. Either way you choose, you must stir the mixture as often as possible or your end up with lumpy paste. If you use the microwave, heat in short 20-30 second burst, stir, heat, stir and so on for 4-5 minutes. Either way you will have to experiment with the proportions of starch to water, but a good starting point with any of the starches is 1 part starch to 4-5 parts of distilled water.

RICE STARCH (BELGIAN)
Rice Starch forms a clear, medium strength adhesive that is lighter and thinner than wheat starch. Rice starch must be cooked to form an adhesive.

WHEAT STARCH

Our Wheat Starch makes a strong adhesive that is clear with a superior smooth texture. This wheat starch must be cooked to form an adhesive.

WHEAT STARCH, pregelatinized (No Cook Type)
Pregelatinized Wheat Starch needs no cooking to produce a very strong and smooth paste. It can easily be dissolved in room temperature water in just a minute or two.

Jin Shofu WHEAT STARCH
Jin Shofu is Japanese precipitated wheat starch which after cooking produces what is considered by many conservators to be the smoothest and best wheat paste available.

Hide, Rabbit & sturgeon Glues

Hide and Rabbit Glue

Hide Glues or animal glues are essentially natural high-polymer proteins. These organic colloids are derived from collagen, which is the protein constituent of animal hides, skins, connective tissue, and bones (eew!). Animal glue is used in a wide range of art conservation, restoration and gilding applications such as: furniture restoration, painting consolidants, china and glass repair, canvas sizing and the making of gesso. Most animal glues have a dry moisture content between 11-14 percent and range in pH from 6.5-7.5. Although our high test technical gelatin #5A is an animal hide glue, it is classified as a technical gelatin because of its extra high purity that yields a cleaner, stronger glue.

Sturgeon Bladders (Isinglass glue)

Isinglass Sturgeon Glue comes from the gallbladders of the Russian sturgeon. The sturgeon gallbladders are a by-product of the caviar industry. Making sturgeon glue from the gallbladders is a somewhat lengthy but simple process of soaking the bladders overnight, heating over a double boiler, then straining the mix through a gauze filter. Once you have completed this procedure, you will have an exceptional glue. Complete instructions come with each order.

Epoxies

Hxtal NYL-1 Epoxy

Hxtal NYL-1 Epoxy is a crystal clear, non-yellowing, two part epoxy resin system. Unlike other epoxies that where made for hobby, home and industrial uses, Hxtal was designed especially for restoration. It can be used on glass, porcelain, marble, wood, metal and much more. Hxtal can be colored, or filled to match porcelain.

The use of Hxtal is not limited to an adhesive, but is also an excellent porcelain glazing medium that can be applied by hand brush or airbrush. When using Hxtal in this application you may need to thin it for proper spraying. It can be thinned with toluene, xylene and many other thinners including the lower aromatic solvents such as some of the Shell solvents or combination thereof. You will need to experiment with the type of solvent combinations and dilution level that best meets the needs of your particular application.

Hxtal fully cures in approximately 5-7 days at room temperature (75° F). Several steps can be taken to speed up the curing process. Raising the temperature surrounding a repaired artifact to 90-100° F for 12 hours or so can cut the cure time to approx. 1-1/2 to 2 days. Raising the temperature of the artifact being repaired to 130-140° F prior to applying Hxtal will reduce cure time. Be careful whenever heating an artifact to these temperatures, previous restoration treatments may have used materials that do not behave well at elevated temperatures. Catalyzed Hxtal raised to the temperature of 120-130° F for fifteen to twenty minutes prior to use will decrease curing time to as short as a 5-8 hours. Remember, when heating catalyzed Hxtal, stir (a Teflon Policeman works well) the mixture throughout the heating process. It is always best to heat the epoxy slowly and evenly. This is best done in a water bath or in other mediums such as a heated sandbox never letting the temperature go above 150° F. Over-elevating the temperature of Hxtal can have side effects such as an increased chance of yellowing and loss of adhesive strength. Short elevated temperatures will reduce the viscosity of Hxtal. This can come in handy when trying to getting the epoxy into tight fitting joints. One bad side-effect from the thinner viscosity is that the epoxy may try to run out of loose fitting joints.

Hxtal is measured by weight. This requires precise measuring that is best done using a digital or triple beam scale that measures in 0.1 gram increments. To mix Hxtal, weigh 3 parts of resin to 1 part of catalyst (3:1). If you don’t have a scale, Hxtal can be measured using syringes. Both the resin and catalyst of Hxtal weighs approximately the same, that is about 2 grams per CC or ml. Knowing this information, and that Hxtal is mixed 3 parts of resin to 1 part of catalyst, allows you to use syringes to "Weigh" the proper amounts of resin and catalyst. The chart below can be used to find the proper mixing proportions.

Total Hxtal NYL-1 Needed Resin / Part-A Catalyst / Part-B

4g / 0.13 oz 3 cc 1 cc 8g / 0.25 oz 6 cc 2 cc 16g / 0.50 oz 12 cc 4 cc 32g / 1.00 oz 24 cc 8 cc

Remember when using syringes, never, ever, cross contaminate your two source bottles of Hxtal by putting a syringe used to measure resin into the container holding catalyst. We suggest you clearly mark or label both syringes.

If you mix too much Hxtal to be used at one time, the leftover amount can be stored in an airtight container or syringe and placed in a freezer for up to a week or so. Just thaw it out and it’s ready to use.

Hxtal Crystal Plus

Hxtal Crystal Plus was formulated for the purpose of, but not limited to, creating large crystal clear epoxy casts. Whenever one tries to mix large batches of most any epoxy, you run the risk of an exothermic reaction (excessive heat generated by the chemical reaction of the resin and catalyst). This heat can cause the epoxy to discolor, damage molds, and in some cases even catch on fire.

To reduce the possibility of an exothermic reaction, the manufacturer of Hxtal NYL-1 has created Hxtal Crystal Plus. The main difference between the two Hxtal epoxies is that the catalyst for Hxtal Crystal Plus contains less of the accelerator component that causes the epoxy to harden. This reduction of accelerator allows Hxtal Crystal Plus to be used to make large castings with little chance of an exothermic reaction. In addition, the accelerator portion of the catalyst is the part that causes yellowing of the epoxy. With the reduction of the accelerator component, Hxtal Crystal Plus is noticeably clearer. This fact becomes quite clear the larger the cast.

Hxtal Crystal Plus is measured, mixed and handled similar to that of Hxtal NYL-1. When mixing and measuring this epoxy simply follow all of the directions that apply to Hxtal NYL-1. Since Hxtal Crystal Plus contains less accelerator it takes somewhat longer to cure. This longer curing time can be reduced by following the warming processes listed for Hxtal NYL-1.

If you already have Hxtal NYL-1 and want to make casts, you simply need to purchase Hxtal Crystal Plus catalyst. The resin is the same for both Hxtal epoxies. In most cases, castings need a large volume of epoxy. It is therefore best to purchase the "kit" which contains both resin and catalyst.

AQUAZOL WATER SOLUBLE RESINS

Aquazol

Aquazol has found its way into every area of conservation. The conservators that have contacted us about this water soluble resin tell us it can be used as an adhesive, inpainting medium, consolidant, binder, and an excellent replacement for hide glue in gesso. The resin is based on the component Poly (2-ethyl-2-oxazoline). It can be used in diverse applications, particularly where water-solubility and thermal stability are desired. Aquazol has broad solubility in water and polar organic solvents such as Toluene, MEK, Acetone, Ethanol, Methanol. Aqueous solutions have a neutral pH.

Unlike other resins that are comprised of many hazardous components, Aquazol resins have very low toxicological and environmental characteristics. In fact, these resins are safe enough they are approved for indirect food additives.

CAB-O-SIL Fumed Silica

Fumed silica is a very fine amorphous silica made by the combustion of silicon tetrachloride vapor with oxygen and hydrogen. The highly thickening properties of fumed silica makes it useful for increasing the viscosity of many liquids. Fumed silica can be used in many resin systems, adhesives and coatings. The specific surface area of this material is 380 m2/g. For weight to volume reference, 8 ounces of fumed silica fill a one gallon container.

#924 Adhesive Transfer Tape
