South Coast Telecommunications Alliance (SCTA) Meeting
Held at General Research Corporation, Santa Barbara CA

September 25, 1996 - Minutes of Meeting

County Connections Web Pages

Moderator: Dale Taylor
Speaker: DJ Perry

Announcements:

Presentation: "County Connections" presented by DJ Perry.

It began with Hollister School, and the Adopt a School program. Steve Bang and Silicon Beach supported the effort. It was also involved with CUE through a grant of matching funding.

The purposes: Make the students proficient users and creators of content on the web. The content gives a level of detail about the SB area not otherwise available. Training is an important part of this successful effort. Training is provided by the county schools administration as well as in workshops. Partnering with outside resources is the third goal of the effort. They partner with businesses like Silicon Beach, Hendry, Tri-Mix, and the County Education Office. They want to present a model to the other schools in California and around the world. They also want to be a registry for other projects that are going on in the area.

It allow students to take virtual field trips to other county areas. The web site gives much more detail of the areas features, history, personality, government, and events. Local research includes surveys and data, oral traditions, local resources, and field trips. Research is done online as well as in the field.

Some of the schools concentrated on their own web page rather than the assigned projects. Participating schools included K-12 county wide. Their were 10 schools in the pilot. They will feature El Precidio de Santa Barbara, Millions of SB, I Mondonnari, and others.

DJ then proceeded to give a web page tour of the project sites.......

Dana asked which teachers do these projects: Those interested in the tools mostly. Age and sex seem to have little bearing in this project.

Another question was whether higher level tools rather than raw html were used. DJ said mostly html with some introductory use of tools like PageMill.

Did the projects relate to the curriculum? Yes, in some cases.

DJs page is http://www.hollister.goleta.k12.ca.us/weatherwatch

Acceptable use forms are signed by parents and students-- their backbone is open and has no filters.

Dana asked how many projects will be done this, the 2nd year. DJ hopes for 15-20 instead of the 4 in the last year. Most of the last years projects are continuing.

Next meeting is 10/23/96
