South Coast Telecommunications Alliance
Minutes of third meeting
July 6, 1994

First we moved the TV out of the room to make more room!

Anne started by accusing Sharon of starting all this. So she talked a
bit about grant writing efforts, collaboration, and all that.

The mission statement was briefly described and passed out.
Nancy talked a bit about the mission statement, oriented towards getting
local telecommunications companies together for resource sharing.

Then we talked about our various assignments. Dale spoke briefly about
some of the speakers he's contacted. Sharon discussed "invitations." There
was a brief discussion about the technical group meeting. They thought
they should be able to help people get hooked up to the network. He
stated the purpose of the technical group:

The purpose of the Technical Committee of the SCTA is to provide
technical leadership in the definition and implementation of a community
information network and to provide information services to users and
operators of such a network.

The subject of an "infrastructure inventory" was raised and it was asked
whether there was a plan for such a thing. Marcy from RAIN said that RAIN
has installed T1 links to Santa Maria and Ventura, and have linked up the
Ventura County Government agencies and all the "black gold" libraries in
the area. She also discussed their recent NTIA grant application, and the
fact that they have received a lot of publicity for their pioneering
efforts toward community networking. She also mentioned their public
access stations at the County Law Library, Santa Barbara High, La Casa De
La Raza, and City Hall.

We then had a brief round of introductions from everyone present. There
was quite a diversity of participation, with 25 or 30 people in
attendance!

Nancy talked a bit about affiliations and memberships, and how SCTA is
neutral on all these issues. There was a handout so that we can discuss
some of this stuff at the next meeting.

We talked about creating a newsgroup hierarchy for the area, where we
could follow a thread of a topic we were interested in as opposed to just
getting a whole lot of mail to wade through. We discussed this as a
concept. First we need a name for the region. SBA? Tri-County? We
discussed the name for the region for a while. We voted on names, got 10
votes for tri, 8 for fig, 6 for sbr.

Nancy talked about the subject line on email. Please watch the subject
line! Be sure it's accurate. Also, don't duplicate names, ie if they're

in the list, don't include them in the to: or cc: line also or there will
be duplicate mail.

The event committee should determine who the target for this event is and
figure out how to get to that audience. So we have some new volunteers
for the event committee.

It was suggested that we have an education committee.

Dale is chairperson of the event committee.

Nancy is head of the mission statement and collaboration committee.

Caleb is heading up the technical committee.

There is no assigned leader for the education committee yet.
Next meeting will be two weeks from tonight, on Wednesday July 20 at 7PM,
at Antioch (we think).

And we adjourned.
