GENERAL COMMENTS MADE:

SCTA and RAIN to collaborate on Virtual Reality Conference in October

SCTA currently discussing the possibility of being a part of the RAIN
network's "Virtual Reality" conference in October. One of the speakers
which was contacted for SCTA is S. Herman who is on the President's
committee.
The purpose of the event is to create awareness of telecommunications in
the community.

SCTA Home Page on Mosaic/World Wide Web

SCTA is current working on a home page on the world wide web. It will
give direction on how to subscribe to the lists, guidelines on procedures,
and phone numbers with email addresses of all SCTA participants including
their bios.

Becky Davis: Brought up the point that we should have a gopher for this
also -- there are many people which do not have access to mosaic.

Jan Ballard: Representing Durand Communications, is interested in
co-creating a community group of people who are interested in
a leadership program in regard to telecommunications. He has experience in
creating over 150 "focus" groups throughout the country by conducting 10
classes per year for the past 4 years. His focus is a group which would
link civic groups in the community. Open invitation to anyone who
is interested. "We could change enemies into collaborators", Jan said.

For more information: Call Jan at 961-8700

John Wiley: Suggested that SCTA conduct on-line meetings through
email. John suggested an that we look into creating an IRC channel. Does
this have to be moderated? It was stated that teleconferencing is a skill
that has to be developed. It can be difficult, and there should
be a moderator so that one person does not do all the talking.

Peter Ramme: Suggested a moderated live chat session and that he would
be interested in persuing this further with the group. Group will
investigate into the development of such a system.

NEXT MEETING OF SCTA

The next meeting is scheduled for September 21st at 7:00 p.m. Through
email we will formalize the agenda for this next meeting. If anyone has
anything that they would like to put on the agenda, please email your
suggestions.

COMMENTS FROM THE GROUP:

Durand Communications will be releasing the first, all windows
bulletin board in September. They would like to offer the BBS as a
community service.

COMMENTS FROM THE GROUP ON:

Reasons for people coming back to SCTA meetings:

great energy
networking
collaboration on projects
bring the community together
talk with others about computers
nice to get out and away from the computer
Anne's cookies
advocacy the group represents for telecommunications
to find out who is doing what in town
good ideas

John Wiley: Not everyone is on the Internet. We need to expand focus of the
group to all forms of telecommunications.

Chuck Ryan: suggested that time be alloted for people in special techologies
to present their product or service. This would educate all further on what
exactly everyone is doing. There is no doubt that we all have a desire
to share what we are doing and learn from others.

Melanie Bury: The Fielding Institute has currently set up their own
Internet node.

Tom Bell: Is currently exploring the commercial aspects of the
Internet and how it relates to marketing a product.

Kenneth Wyrick: (not present) The news is that he is working on a grant
Project with Nikleodean called "Kids helping communities" which is a
project working with the boys and girls clubs in the community.

Nancy Oster: Biggest problem in getting email access is in getting the
equipment setup. We need the help of volunteers to coordinate this to put
parts together to build computers from scrap/discarded parts. We need to
get people involved by letting them know that there is something which they
want to use.

LET'S RECYCLE THOSE OLD COMPUTERS

Frank Dziuba: Suggested that SCTA organize a project to build computers.
We have the expertise needed. We could gather components donated from
the businesses in town. We could enlist college students to put them
together.

AND THAT'S ALL FOR THIS WEEK'S MEETING!
See you on-line.
