He discussed the Antioch letter and passed it around for people to sign to express their appreciation to Antioch for hosting our meetings. We talked about the November meeting; possible date is November 16th. We will need a site; Stephen Stone will talk to Cottage hospital about using a meeting room there. Goleta Library has a room, County schools has a meeting room on Hollister Ave., city public works has a room that's available sometimes; Ridley Tree has some rooms (SBCC); that would mean meeting on Fri-Sun. Possible meeting rooms were discussed for a while. Announcements: Marty Rickler talked about the community training bank in Feb; invites non-profit agency members to come and learn various things. In Feb, it will be about the Internet. This Friday, there will be a presentation to health care agencies in the community; 40 agencies are invited. He also discussed his consultant list, and he discussed the project about organizing health care info on the Net. Marty can be reached at paladin@silcom.com or paladin@rain.org. Mary Hall talked about the La Colina Computers For Schools project. They are looking for computers; they get matching computers from some agency for every one they receive as a donation. There was a bit of discussion about it. Antioch is moving towards a Service Learning Center here. It is potentially a community resource for people who want to write grants for the community. Jan Ballard announced the formation of a community political action design team, where people will design ways to be involved in setting community political actions. He can be contacted at Durand Communications if people are interested in participating. Dave Oster discussed progress on the Community Backbone idea; he has met with the County, who recommends that there be a champion within the County to make it happen. He mentioned that he had met with John Bruno at UCSB, who was supportive of the idea. He talked about the difference between leased lines and Frame Relay, where with leased lines the user pays on a per mile basis, whereas with Frame Relay there is no distance charge. There was some further discussion. Becky Davis discussed UCSB's providing Internet access, as to whether they will continue to provide access. UC may be one of the major access providers in the country, or they may stop doing it altogether. There are discussion going on at the UC system about these issues. RAIN talked about the Cafe Internet sessions; this week will be about Internet culture. These are training sessions about Internet access in general. Steve Bang from Silicon Beach is installing Frame Relay and a T1 connection directly to CIX. Jim Sterne explained that CIX is a consortium of Internet providers who have agreed to exchange packets with each other. Steve is putting together some documen tation about accessing the Net; tentatively titled "Surfing at Silicon Beach." There was some discussion of the "tri." newsgroups, specifically as to whether they are carried by all the sites at UCSB. Becky Davis said they are, and that UCSB is going through a reorganization because of the new chancellor, so there is a lot of confusion currently about future directions there. We had brief introductions all around. Jill Charboneau of Advanced Information Design Associates then gave a presentation about CU-SeeMe, a videoconferencing application for the Internet, developed at Cornell University. It allows up to eight windows on the screen for videoconferencing. Client software is available for Macintosh and Windows systems. The "servers" in this case are called "reflectors," and they require a Sun Sparcstation or Silicon Graphics Indie; some other reflector systems may be available. More information is available at server "gated.cornell.edu" on the Internet, in directory /pub/video. Use "anonymous" as the user id; there is no password. Be sure to look at the ReadMe file there for more information. The meeting was adjourned at 9:52.
