What's so good about SCTA meeting? People come to learn and share their
knowledge and come up with new ideas.

What's going on with the County Backbone Concept?

The idea is still being promoted to the county. The idea will be
presented on KCET this Thursday at 8:00 p.m. The subject will be the

The telecommute is on!

Pepa Ojeda/Ron Dolin - Internet Cafe

Internet Cafe announces their Santa Barbara County Home Page, which
is an on-line listing of services and businesses in Santa Barbara County.
They can be accessed on the world wide web through the lynx or
mosaic browser.

The URL is: http://www.internet-cafe.com/sb/sb.html

Carl Hopkins, Santa Barbara County

Introduced the Token Ring Network of Santa Barbara which is
throughout the county and is Novell exclusive. There are 16,020 nodes
on the ring currently with approximately 1,400 PC Most of the existing mainframe network has been converted to token
ring. Traffic in most circumstances stays on the local rings and there
is extensive internetworking between the locations.

Standardization and replication of what works has been the theme of
making the system operate efficiently. All the computers talk to one
another! The software used by the County is: windows, lotus 123,
word perfect, email system, (connected to the Internet through
Compuserve) same 3270 emulator, and basically same database
program everywhere.

Carl says that Token ring card is more expensive then Ethernet.
Wiring is more expensive for Ethernet than token ring. Better
performance from Token Ring in the opinion of the County. Dataease
(selected in 1985), is the database used by the County. They
are looking towards SQL server, and development will be done in visual
basic and foxpro.

County goals are to link each of the seven cities to the using source
route transparent bridging.

What will be done in the future? Final stages of bringing in a large order
of cabletron hub. Netview, land Network manager, need improved
resolutionof errors, security, statistics and management. Will be adding
T1 lines. Will be implementing a video teleconferencing project
through a grant from the Air Pollution Control District. They intend
to do video teleconferencing between Santa Barbara and Santa Maria.
Future plans include TCP/IP addresses.

Concept of the community Backbone is being considered seriously.
Whatever communication can be done in the future can be done with this
network. Networking is here to stay and people will start using it!

be made for the next meeting in January. At that time, a more
formal structure for SCTA will be discussed with possible nominations.
