Notes for JOHN DOWNS:
In the book "The Downs Family of Virginia,
Ohio and Indiana" by George Gilbert McCarthy, it shows David Downs as
the son of John Downs, a soldier of the Revolution. As far as I know,
no one has found the parents of John, or if they have, they haven't told
ME about it!
John Downs was b. ca. 1745 place unknown, but has been speculated to
have been Orange Co., VA. It is thought that he lived in Loudon Co. and
Berkley Co. VA.
I am descended from William, David's brother. The family went to Ross
Co., OH in 1799 - John Downs died there in 1805. Some members of the
family came to Tippecanoe Co., IN, in the 1840's.
I don't know if copies of this book are still available, but Mr.
McCarthy's address, last I knew it, was 36 Hansell Road, Murray Hill, NJ
07974. I bought the book directly from him in 1990.

His known siblings were (I have left off dates at this
time): William (mine), John, James, Jane (or Jean), Rebecca, Thomas,
Susanna.
David was the sixth child of John Downs and his wife, Catherine (maiden
name unknown). He was born March 3, 1783 in Virginia, and died August
10, 1856 at Ross Co., Ohio. He married twice, 1st to Sarah Murphy on
Oct. 17, 1805, and second in 1829 to Julia Wieder, both in Ross Co., OH.
He is buried at the Hopetown Cemetery, Springfield, Ross Co. He served
in the War of 1812 as a sgt. in Capt. John Entrekin's Co.
Children of David Downs and Sarah Murphy:
1. John b. 1806 in Ross Co., came to Tippecanoe Co., IN and later to
Carroll Co., IN. He married Mary Ann Hines.
2. Hannah b. Sept. 28, 1808, d. Sept. 24, 1852. She married George
Kinneman.
3. Mary A. She married Asa Maddux on Aug. 22, 1830 in Ross Co.
4. Lucinda, b. 1814, she married John Campbell on Jan. 22, 1835 at Ross
Co.
5. David. He married Elizabeth Kinneman on Apr. 4, 1839 at Ross Co.
6. Wesley. He married Mary Ann Kinneman.
7. Eli, b. 1817. He married Caroline (maiden name unknown) He lived in
Pulaski and White counites in Ind., and later Lafayette Co., MO.
Children of David Downs and Julia Wieder:
1. Susan, b. Jan. 15, 1834; d. Mar. 17, 1855. She married J.D.
Richardson Aug. 14, 1853 Ross Co. They are buried at Hopetown Cem.
2. Sarah, b. 3-27, 1837 at Ross Co. d. May 16, 1853. Unmarried. She is
buried in Hopetown cem.
3. Amaziah, b. Apr. 2, 1830, d. Feb. 21, 1857. He married Ellen Downing
on Jan. 4, 1855. Buried at Hopetown Cem.
4. W.W. b. 1840. (Perhaps Wesley)
5. Nelson, (that he is a child of David and Julia has not been
established.)
