Chandler, Lincoln County, Oklahoma.
Notes for Rolla Adelbert
Burnham:
Several months ago, you
posted a message on the Burnham GenForum page, indicating that your ancestor
Collin Abel Burnham went from West Potsdam, NY, to Muscatine, IA, right after
the Civil War.
My ancestor Rolla
Adelbert Burnham (born May 1846 in Potsdam, NY and son of Sylvanus Burnham, Jr.)
and his brother James Douglas Burnham (b. 1843) also went to Iowa at some point
shortly after the Civil War. (Whether
the brothers went together, or one followed the other, I don't know; and whether
they went with their parents, or whether the parents followed them, I also do
not know.) And whether they first
went through Muscatine, IA and had a common connection there, I do not know.
America Frye in Vinton.
I also have a picture of my ancestor Rolla Burnham and his first wife,
Laura Ellison, taken in Vinton, IA, around the same time-perhaps at the same
time as James' wedding, or perhaps 2 or three years later at the most.
Laura Ellison had a brother, E. O. Ellison, who was a photographer in a
town not very far away-Traer, IA-and I had also previously considered the
possibility that Rolla Burnham married Laura Ellison, then they went west from
NY to where here brother was living. I
am of the impression that the Ellisons were originally from New York, not Iowa,
because an Ellison nephew (by marriage) of my ancestor Rolla sent him a picture
from New York much later, in 1914. But
whether Rolla Burnham married Laura Ellison in NY or IA, I have not established.
Elvira, 50 [should be
48?], born NY
Rolla A., 24, born NY,
"works on farm"
Fanny, 8, born NY, at
home. [I wasn't previously aware of her.]
This Sylvanus, Jr. and
Elvira would be the aunt and uncle of your Collin Abel Burnham, and Rolla and
James would be his first cousins. I
assume, being that closely connected, they were all aware of each others'
presence in Iowa, which may somehow have been connected??
James and family went
from Iowa to Kansas in 1870, and homesteaded in Rush County, KS, in 1877.
James died in 1880, leaving 6 young kids.
His widow raised them, living another 50 years on the homestead.
Rolla's first wife,
Laura, died. At least by 1888 he,
too, was in Rush County, KS, and married his second wife, Belle Craig; and after
having 3 children in Kansas, they went to Lincoln County, Oklahoma, to
homestead, in about 1895, and had another 7 children. Both Rolla and his wife Belle are buried in Chandler, Lincoln
County, Oklahoma.
If there is any
information that we can share with each other, I would appreciate it-either
about the family when they were living in NY, or about how my ancestor got to
Kansas from Iowa-how long and where he stayed in Iowa, and whether he went to
Iowa after first stopping for several years in Nebraska, etc.
I haven't filled it in between 1870 and 1888.
Thanks.

MACYVILLE.
The once prosperous and
busy little hamlet of Macyville, is situated on the summit of the divide of a
low range of hills. From this point water runs each way. The place was once
known as Ten Mile, because of it being midway between the Republican and Solomon
rivers. A postoffice was established there October 1, 1871, with George W. Macy
as postmaster. In 1879 the name was changed to Macyville, taking its origin from
its founder and first postmaster. Mr. Macy conducted a store and continued
postmaster there until about four years ago, a period of twenty-two years and
six months.
The village now
consists of a store of general merchandise operated by A.E. Danderand, and one
of the best equipped blacksmith shops in the county, owned by E.N. Burgeson.
(see sketch.)
In 1893 a church was
erected by the Methodist Episcopal society at a cost of one thousand one hundred
dollars. The congregation was organized a year prior. The church was built by a
subscription and a donation from the church extension board. The Macyville
school is one mile north of the town. Mr. Macy made the entry, and furnished
money to pay for the ground which the district refunded him later.
Some dozen years ago
there were three stores in Macyville and the little town did a flourishing
business, as Mr. Macy's books show sales of over two hundred dollars in one day.
Including all who received their mail there, the village numbered in its palmy
days two hundred inhabitants. The location is a beautiful one and a fine view of
the country is had for many miles around.
