Notes for Rolla Adelbert Burnham:

Several months ago, you posted a message on the Burnham GenForum page, indicating that your ancestor Collin Abel Burnham went from West Potsdam, NY, to Muscatine, IA, right after the Civil War.

My ancestor Rolla Adelbert Burnham (born May 1846 in Potsdam, NY and son of Sylvanus Burnham, Jr.) and his brother James Douglas Burnham (b. 1843) also went to Iowa at some point shortly after the Civil War.  (Whether the brothers went together, or one followed the other, I don't know; and whether they went with their parents, or whether the parents followed them, I also do not know.)  And whether they first went through Muscatine, IA and had a common connection there, I do not know.

James Douglas Burnham was in Vinton, Benton Co., IA, at least by 1868, because on Aug. 13, 1868, he married May

America Frye in Vinton.  I also have a picture of my ancestor Rolla Burnham and his first wife, Laura Ellison, taken in Vinton, IA, around the same time-perhaps at the same time as James' wedding, or perhaps 2 or three years later at the most.  Laura Ellison had a brother, E. O. Ellison, who was a photographer in a town not very far away-Traer, IA-and I had also previously considered the possibility that Rolla Burnham married Laura Ellison, then they went west from NY to where here brother was living.  I am of the impression that the Ellisons were originally from New York, not Iowa, because an Ellison nephew (by marriage) of my ancestor Rolla sent him a picture from New York much later, in 1914.  But whether Rolla Burnham married Laura Ellison in NY or IA, I have not established.

Just today I found a census record in Story County, Iowa, for 1870.  To my surprise, it shows Rolla Burnham (age 24) living with his parents in Story County, IA.  I thought he was probably married before this date, and I had assumed that his parents remained in Potsdam, New York; however, neither of these assumptions is apparently true.

At the 1870 census, Story County, Washington Township, Iowa, at page 164, I have the following:

Burnham, S[ylvanus, Jr.], 56 [should be 50?], farmer, born Mass [correct].

Elvira, 50 [should be 48?], born NY

Rolla A., 24, born NY, "works on farm"

Fanny, 8, born NY, at home. [I wasn't previously aware of her.]

This Sylvanus, Jr. and Elvira would be the aunt and uncle of your Collin Abel Burnham, and Rolla and James would be his first cousins.  I assume, being that closely connected, they were all aware of each others' presence in Iowa, which may somehow have been connected??

James and family went from Iowa to Kansas in 1870, and homesteaded in Rush County, KS, in 1877.  James died in 1880, leaving 6 young kids.  His widow raised them, living another 50 years on the homestead.

Rolla's first wife, Laura, died.  At least by 1888 he, too, was in Rush County, KS, and married his second wife, Belle Craig; and after having 3 children in Kansas, they went to Lincoln County, Oklahoma, to homestead, in about 1895, and had another 7 children.  Both Rolla and his wife Belle are buried in Chandler, Lincoln County, Oklahoma.

If there is any information that we can share with each other, I would appreciate it-either about the family when they were living in NY, or about how my ancestor got to Kansas from Iowa-how long and where he stayed in Iowa, and whether he went to Iowa after first stopping for several years in Nebraska, etc.  I haven't filled it in between 1870 and 1888.

Thanks.
