John
H. Ake
The
subject of this sketch was born in Virginia, December 29, 1820, and died
at his home in Wymore . Thursday August 29, 1895 at 11:15 pm, making his
age 74 years, 7 months and 29 days. For
a man of his age he was very vigorous, and had he not met with an accident
several months ago, which resulted in a broken limb, it is very probable
that he would yet be actively engaged in business; but the tedious
confinement. Coming as it did in the warmest season gradually - sapped him
of his vitality until he succumbed from sheer exhaustion, passing away
quietly as if in sleep. During
his lifetime Mr. Ake was a very active businessman, and took great
interest in politics, always having been a democrat of the stalwart kind.
He was one of the pioneers of westward movement, and settled at Muscatine,
Ia., at an early day. In 1860 he was a delegate from Iowa to the national democratic convention, held at Charleston. He
removed from Muscatine to Nebraska City, about twenty-five years ago,
where he made his home until the B&M was built through to Denver, when
he removed to Wymore. He
was ah honorable and upright businessman in every particular. And
had the confidence and esteem of the entire community. 'The
funeral services were held at the residence, Sunday morning. Sept.1st,
and were largely attended. After appropriate remarks by Rev. A H.Law, of
the Baptist church, the remains were taken to Overlook Cemetery and placed
in their last resting place. Mr.
Ake was' the father of ten children, seven of whom were at the funeral. To
them and other relatives is extended the sympathy of many friends. The
Wymorean,
