November 12, 1239,
Gilbert took the cross with his brother-in-law Richard of Cornwall at
Northampton. Gilbert took the cross with the understanding that Richard would
use his influence to return Gilbert to the king’s favor. Gilbert had lost favor
when he took Richard of Cornwall’s side in the rising of 1238 against the
king’s foreign favorites. In July 1240, Gilbert was on the point of leaving
England to go on crusade when the king recalled him and took him back into
favor.
Gilbert had been
intended for an ecclesiastical career. He had taken minor orders and received
the livings of Orford in Suffolk on May 30, 1225, and of Wigham in Kent on
September 19, 1228. He was in Ireland when Richard was killed, and he returned
to Wales. On Gilbert’s return to England, he was granted a pardon by King Henry
III for taking part in Richard’s rebellion. His brothers Walter and Anselm were
also pardoned. On June 11, 1235, Gilbert was knighted and invested with all his
brother’s lands and offices by King Henry at Worcester.
On June 27, 1241,
Gilbert was taking part in an unauthorized tournament at Ware when he was
thrown from his horse and drug across the field. He died from his injuries that
very day and was buried in the Temple Church in London near his father and his
brother William.

1369. She married JOHN "OF GAUNT" PLANTAGENET, son
of EDWARD PLANTAGENET and PHILIPPA DE HAINAULT. He died
1399.
Notes for JOHN "OF GAUNT" PLANTAGENET:
John Plantagenet,
called of Gaunt, Gant or Ghent, from the place of his birth, 4th son of Edward
III, was born in 1340. He was of the Beaufort branch of the Plantagenet House.
In 1342 he was created Earl of Richmond, and advanced to the Dukedom of
Lancaster, by his father, Edward III, 1363. He married 1st Blanche, the great
heiress of Henry Plantagenet, Duke of Lancaster, who was the son of Edmund,
Earl of Lancaster, son of Henry III, King of England. It was through his wife
Blanche that he became Duke of Lancaster. He married 2nd Constance, elder
daughter of Peter, King of Castile, and in her right assumed the title of King
of Castile and Leon. For sixteen years the pursuit of his kingdom was the chief
object of John's ambition. By this regal dignity, as well as Duke of Lancaster
and Richmond, and Earl of Derby, Lincoln and Leicester, he had summons to
Parliament. He was likewise Duke of Aquitaine, in France, and Knight of the
Garter. On the decease of his father, Edward III, this prince was joined in the
administration of the affairs during the minority of his nephew, Richard II. He
subsequently attempted the conquest of Spain at the head of a fine army; and
landing at the Groyne, advanced to Compostella, where he was met by John, King
of Portugal, between whom and his eldest daughter, the Lady Philippa, a
marriage was concluded. Then he marched into Castile and there ratified a
treaty of peace, by which he abandoned his claim to the throne of Castile and
Leon in consideration of a large sum of money, and the marriage of Henry,
Prince of the Asturias, with his only daughter (by his 2nd wife), the Lady
Catherine Plantagenet. (Prince Henry afterwards became Henry III of Castile,
and their son John, King of Castile, was the father of Isabella of Castile,
Queen of Ferdinand of Aragon, who financed Christopher Columbus.) John of Gaunt
married for his 3rd wife Catherine Swynford, widow of Sir Hugh Swynford, and
daughter of Sir Payne Roet. Catherine had been his mistress for many years, and
his children by her, who bore the name of Beaufort, were now legitimatized. In
this King Richard II found it politic to conciliate him. In the latter part of
his life he lived in retirement, having incurred the displeasure of Richard by
a motion which he made in Parliament, that his son Henry, of Bolingbroke,
should be declared heir to the throne. John was neither a great soldier nor a
statesman, but he was a chivalrous knight and loyal to what he thought were the
intrests of his family. In spite of opportunities and provocations, he never
lent himself to treason. He was also a patron of Chaucer, whose "Boke of
the Duchesse" was a lament for Blanche of Lancaster, John's 1st wife. John
died at Ely House, Holborn, Feb. 3, 1399, and was buried at St. Paul's near the
high altar. By 1st wife, Blanche Plantagenet, he had:
Henry Bolingbroke,
later Henry IV, married Mary, daughter of Humphrey de Bohun.
Philippa married John,
King of Portugal.
Elizabeth married John
Holland and Sir John Cornwall.
By 2nd wife,
Constance, daughter of King Peter of Castile, he had:
Catherine married
Henry III of Castile, and was grandmother of Isabella.
John of Gaunt married
3rd Catherine Swynford. Her father, Sir Payne Roet, came to England in the
entourage of Philippa of Hainault, John's mother. They had:
John de Beaufort, Earl
of Somerset and Marquess of Dorset, married Margaret Holland. Their
granddaughter, Margaret de Beaufort, married Edmond Tudor, and they were
parents of Henry VII.
Henry de Beaufort, of
whom further.
Thomas de Beaufort, d.
s. p.
Joan de Beaufort married
Ralph Neville, Earl of Westmoreland, and became the ancestor of Edward IV and
Richard III and many noble families.
11. Henry de Beaufort,
circa 1377-1447, English Cardinal and Bishop of Winchester, was the 2nd son of
John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, by Catherine, wife of Sir Hugh Swynford. His
parents were not married until 1396, and in 1397 King Richard II declared the
four children legitimate. Henry spent some of his youth at Aix-la-Chapelle, and
having entered the church he received various appointments, and was consecrated
Bishop of Lincoln in July, 1398. When his half-brother became King as Henry IV,
in 1399, Beaufort began to take a prominent place in public life; he was made
Chancellor in 1403, but resigned in 1404, when he was translated from Lincoln
to Winchester. Henry and his brother and sister were legitimatized by act of
Parliament, for all purposes save succession to the throne, and they derived
their surname from the Castle of Beaufort, the place of their birth, in France,
which was part of the marriage portion of Blanche of Artois upon her marriage
with Edmund, called Crouchback, 1st Earl of Lancaster, son of Henry III, which
Edmund was grandfather of John of Gaunt's 1st wife. After having resigned his
Chancellorship in 1426, he again accepted it from Pope Martin, who was anxious
to secure his aid for the crusade against the Hussites. He accompanied King
Henry VI to Normandy in 1430 and in December, 1431, crowned him King of France.
Beaufort was a man of considerable wealth, and on several occasions he lent
large sums of money to the King. His interests were secular and he was
certainly proud and ambitious. He was merciful in his political enmities,
devotedly faithful, and ready to sacrifice his wealth and labour for the King.
He died at Wolvesey Palace, Winchester, April 10, 1447. He married Alice,
daughter of Richard Fitz-Alan, 10th Earl of Arundel, K. G. (In the 1st of
Richard II, this nobleman being considered Admiral of the King's Fleet in the
westward, and was retained by indenture to serve the King for one-fourth year,
in the company of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, King of Castile. In 15th of
Richard II, when the King regained his power, a Parliament at Westminster
dismissed several of the great officers of state, amongst whom was Richard
FitzAlan, who was removed from his command at Admiral, and two years
afterwards, the Parliament then sitting, he was accused of treason by the Duke
of Lancaster, but escaped for the moment, and sought to retire from public
life. The King entertaining, however, the strongest personal enmity to him,
contrived to get the Earl of Arundel into his hands, and he was brought to
immediate trial and condemned to be hanged, drawn and quartered as a traitor.
The sentence, however, was somewhat mitigated and he was beheaded in London,
21st of Richard II. He married 1st, 1359, Lady Elizabeth de Bohun, and had
Thomas, Elizabeth [who married 4th Sir Robert Goushill, from whom you descend
in several ways. E. E. W.]. Joan, Margaret and Alice. One reference says Alice
married John Cherlton of Powis, and Enc. Brit., Vol. 3, p. 586, says: Henry
Beaufort was the lover of Lady Alice FitzAlan, daughter of Richard, Earl of
Arundel, by whom he had a daughter, Joan Beaufort, who married Sir Edward
Stradling of St. Donats, in Glamorganshire in Wales. Alice FitzAlan's mother,
Elizabeth de Bohun, was 6th in descent from Henry de Bohun, Surety for the
Magna Charta.)

1667, Watertown, Middlesex, MA.{6} John Warren came to New England from
Nayland, Suffolk, England, with the fleet of Sir Richard Saltonstall. [4/462]
The fleet arrived at Salem June 12,1630. John Warren traveled with Governor
Winthrop aboard the "Arabella".[9] From Salem, he with the rest of
the company went to Charlestown, whence, after a brief stay they moved to
Watertown.[2/252] John Warren settled in Watertown, Massachusetts at age 45. He
was admitted as a freeman on May 18,1631; and was Selectman from 1636 to 1640
[1/619-620] which was a position of high regard. In 1635, he and Abraham Browne
were appointed to lay out all highways, and to see that they were
repaired.[1/619-620,7]
..... However, he does
seem to have lost some favor with the authorities sometime thereafter as can be
seen from the old records.[8] He sympathized with the Quakers, and was at odds
with the Puritan Church.[2/130] In October 1651, he and Thomas Arnold, were
each fined 20 shillings for an offence against the laws concerning baptism. On
April 4, 1654, he was fined, for neglect of public worship, 14 Sabbaths, each 5
shillings = 3 pounds, 10 shillings. On March 14, 1658/59, he was to be warned
for not attending public worship; but "old Warren is to be found in
town". On May 27, 1661, the houses of "old Warren and goodman
Hammond", were ordered to be searched for Quakers. [1/619-620] He appears
to have agreed in religious sentiments with Dr. John Clark, of Newport,
Nathaniel Briscoe, Sr., who returned from Watertown to England, Thomas Arnold,
who moved from Watertown to Providence, RI. They were probably all
Baptists.[1/960] Despite his lack of conviction for the established church and
his leanings toward the Quaker faith, John never gave up or lost his church
membership. He may have kept his membership to avoid losing some privileges,
such as voting, etc.[5/1975,1/619]
John Warren came to
america in 1630, aged 45; settled in Watertown; was adm.
freeman, May 18, 1631; was selectman, 1636
to '40. In 1635 he and
Abraham Browne were appointed to lay out all highways, and
to see that they were repaired. His
Homestall lot of 12
acres in 1642 was bounded West by the highway, East by
William Hammond, North byJohn Biscoe, South by
Isaac Sterne. He also
owned 7 other lots amounting to about 176 acres. Oct., 1651, he
and Thomas Arnold, were each fined 20s,
for an offense against
the laws concerning baptism. Mar., 14 1658/9 he was to be
warned for not attending public worship;
but 'Old Warren is not
to be found in town.' 4 Apr 1654, he was fined, for negelect of
public worship, 14 Sabbaths, each 5s =
3£ 10s. May 27, 1661,
the house of 'old Warren and goodman Hammond' were ordered
to be searched for quakers.
..... By the time the
first inventory of grants and possessions was taken in Watertown in 1639, John
had acquired 278 acres of land, including 1) a homestall of 12 acres bounded
west with the highway, east by William Hammond, north by John Biscoe, and south
by Isaac Stearns; 2) 9 acres of upland bounded south by John Biscoe, north by
William Hammond, end east and west with his own land; 3) 3 acres of meadow
bounded east by William Hammond, north by John Simson, and west with his own;
4) 13 acres of plowland in the further plain, lot 84; 5) thirteen of meadow in
the remote meadows, lot 50; 6) 16 1/2 acres upland beyond the further plain,
lot 19; 7) 60 acres of upland being a great Divident in the fourth division,
lot 26; 8) a farm of 152 acres upland in the third division.[6/42-43] His homestall
lot of 12 acres, in 1642, was bounded west by the highway, east by William
Hammond, north by John Biscoe, south by Isaac Sterne. He, also, then owned 7
other lots, amounting to about 176 acres.[1/619-620] In the second inventory
taken in 1644 the 152 acre farm had been dispose of, but John has been granted:
8) 1 1/2 acres of meadow in Wards Meadow bounded by Thomas Arnold; 9) 1 1/2
acres of meadow near the little plain adjoining to John Eddy; 10) 2 acres of
marsh southeast with the river and the west by the backlane.[6/100] By the end
of his life, John still owned 188 acres of land.[3/161]
..... His wife,
Margaret, died November 6,1662, and he died December 13,1667, aged 82. [1/619-
620] John Warren's Will, dated November 30, proved December 17, 1667, mentions
the following children, probably all born in England; John, Mary, Daniel,
Elizabeth.[1/619-620] The Will gives to son Daniel the 16 acres of land he now
lives on; to daughter Mary Bigelow, 16 acres of land in lieu of township, now
in her possession; to daughter Elizabeth Knapp, 16 acres of plowland, now in
possession of her husband, James Knapp. The residue to sons John and Daniel.
[Prob. Rec.III.,p.345].[1/960] In his Will he gave his daughter Elizabeth a
book titled "the playnes man path way to heaven". He also mentioned
his sons Daniel and John, daughter-in-law Mary Warren, wife of Daniel, daughter
Mary Bigelow, Elizabeth Knap, wife of James Knap, grand children Warren, Mary
Bigelow, and Michal Bloyce, daughter of Richard Bloyce. The Will was witnessed
by Joseph Taynter and John Randall.[7/60] Inventory of the estate was taken
Dec.16, 1667 by John Coolidge, and Henry Freeman and amounted to 167.4.0.[7/62]

The Warren-Scarlett
ancestry in England is primarily based on the material presented in The
Ancestry of Eva Belle Kempton 1878-1908: Part I The Ancestry of Warren Francis
Kempton 1817-1879, by Dean Crawford Smith and edited by Melinde Lutz Sanborn
(Boston, 1996), pages 462-474. This work contains much additional supporting
material, and additional details on family members.
This is a note I
received in Oct 1997. Maybe somebody out there can help.....ROD
Thank you so much for
making this information available to Warren searchers. Our maternal gg uncle
was Joseph Warren Snedaker. His mother was a BOWKER. The researcher who sent
your information believes your Warren/Bigelow line connects with our Bowkers.
Would you happen to know where in the line this might take place?
Lucinda Bowker was the
daughter of Joseph, b. 1773 in Ulster Co. NY
Joseph was the son of
Silas Bowker Sr. and Esther Hobbs, b 13 April 1739 in Weston, Middlesex, MA and
d. 1824 in Tompkins Co, NY.
Ester was the daughter
of Ebenezer Hobbs, b. 1710, d. 1762; and Eunice Garfield b. 1710 and d. 1776.
Ebenezer Hobbs was the
son of Josiah Jr., b. 1685 and d. 1779; and Esther Davenport, b. 1691 and d.
1778.
Josiah Hobbs was the
son of Josiah Sr. b. 1649 and d. 1741.
Any thoughts you might
have regarding a possible BOWKER and WARREN connection would be most kind.

I am descended from
SAMUEL (Samuel,John,John) born July 19, 1719 who married Abigail Wing. I do
have one question- other sources that I have found give Margaret Bayley as John
Warren's wife, not Margaret Clear (they have the same dates). I was just
wondering where you discovered that name. I am wondering if Clear or Bayley is
the name of a previous marriage. A page I found on the WEB lists an additional
child,Mary, as the child of John Warren and Michal (Jennison) Blois:
Children of JOHN WARREN and MARGARET Clear FOWLE are:
i. MARY (1)21 WARREN, b. 1615.
ii. ELIZABETH WARREN, b. 1619.
iii. SARAH WARREN, b. 1620.

Notes for JOHN BIGELOW:
John Biglo, Immigrant
Ancestor
The immigrant ancestor
of nearly all persons in North America bearing the surname Bigelow in any of
its several variants, is John Biglo of Watertown, Massachusetts. He lived from
1617 to 1703. Many of his descendants have been recorded in a genealogy
entitled The Bigelow Family in America, written by Gilman Bigelow Howe, printed
1890. The book was published by Charles Hamilton of Boston, and is no longer
available except by photo-copy reprint. Rebound used copies occasionally come into
the used-book market with the simple title Bigelow Genealogy.
In this book Howe
states that he was unable to obtain any satisfactory account of the progenitor
of John Biglo, and quotes conflicting traditions stating that the surname is of
various national origins. He also quotes the late genealogist H.G. Somerby, who
felt that John Biglo came from Wrentham, Suffolk, England, and was son of
Randall and Jane Beageley, who had their youngest son, John, baptized 16
February 1617. Also, from the probate records of Wrentham, Somerby quotes the
will of a Francis Baguley, blacksmith, of Wrentham, who in a will dated 20
October 1656, granted five pounds "to his brother John Baguley, now living
in New England, if he comes for it within two years". He offered no proof
that Francis was son of Randall Baguley.
The rector of Wrentham
parish in 1617 was the Rev. John Phillips, who later emigrated to Dedham,
Massachusetts. During his years in Dedham, Phillips once stated that the
blacksmith John Biglo of Watertown, Massachusetts was the same infant whom he
had baptized in 1617 as the son of Randall Beageley, and that he (Phillips) had
"known John Biglo from earliest youth upward','
Further, in a civil
case in Watertown during his lifetime, John Biglo took the witness stand and
identified himself as "John Biglo, formerly of Wrentham, England."
From these facts we state the identity and parentage of John Biglo, and through
parish and probate records in England, can prove three generations of his
English ancestry.
John Biglo seems to
have arrived in Watertown, MA about 1632. He probably came with an older
relative, Elizabeth Bigelow, second wife of Deacon Richard Butler, who after a
short stay in Massachusetts, followed the Rev. Thomas Hooker to Connecticut. It
is assumed that Elizabeth was an older sister or first cousin. No
ship's-records exist showing the date of their arrival. It is probable that
John Biglow and/or Mary Warren came over on one of the ships of the Winthrop
Fleet.
John Biglo took part
in the Pequot War of 1636, serving from Watertown. The next public mention we
find of him is his marriage in Watertown on 30 October 1642-- the first
marriage recorded in Watertown--before Mr. Nowell, to Mary Warren, daughter of
John and Margaret Warren. Ella Biglow's book, Reminiscences of Historic
Marlborouqh, MA, contains a fictional description of John at his wedding, in
white satin breeches, ruffled shirt, and silver shoe buckles. There is also a
docu-drama book called The Winthrop Woman, that is very well researched. On page
250, there is related a cannon-ball pitching contest between Will Hallet and
"his opponent -- Bigelow, the blacksmith." The contest was held in
the Common of "little Boston", on Election Day in the mid to late
1630's. The book relates the life of Elizabeth, a grand-daughter of John
Winthrop, and a passenger on one of the ships of the same Winthrop Fleet.
To quote from Howe's
book, "from the list of those who took the oath of fidelity at Watertown
1652, we find that John Biggalough was one of the number, and he became a
freeman 18 April 1690 which we find from the roll of freeman written as John
Bigolo; under the same date we find that Samuel Begaloo was made a freeman, and
by another list, date 16 May 1690, we find Samuel Biggilo and John Warren Jr.
were made freemen. On the return of soldiers who were in the service from 25
November to 3 December 1675 [King Philip's War]we find the names of John
Bigulah Sr, Michael Flegg, and Isaac Leonard, the last being wounded. Thus we
find the name variously spelled by different officials, but when we find the
name written by any member of the family, in those early days it is written
Biglo, Bigelo, or Bigelow." Follow links: soldiers and battles for
listings and details of King Philip's War.
John Biglo appears by
various accounts to have been a blacksmith, and again from town records we
quote: "Agreed with John Biglo that for ten trees the towne allowed him
for the setting up of a shop for a Smithes forge, that he shall either go on
with his promise of setting up his trade, which is the trade of a Smith, within
one twelfmonth after the date hereof or else to pay unto the towne ten
shillings for these ten trees he acknowledged to have off the towne."
Dated 4 March 1651.
John Biglo was chosen
a surveyor of highways in 1652 and 1660, a constable [Tax-collector] in 1663,
and one of the selectmen or town council, in 1665, 1670, and 1671. His homesite
consisted of six acres and was bounded north by Richard Ambler and William
Parker, east by Thomas Straight, south by the highway, and on the west by Miles
Ives After the death of his wife Mary in 1691, he married (2) on 2 October
1694, Sarah Bemis, daughter of Joseph Bemis. She outlived him. He died on 14
July 1703, at he age of 86 years, as recorded in town records. His will was dated
4 January 1703 and was proved 23 July 1703.(His will is quoted entirely after
his children list)

mark
The inventory of John
Biglo's estate amounted to L 627-12-00. This was a middle-class fortune. Among
the expenses charged for the funeral were several pairs of black gloves, twenty
gallons of wine, bottles for the wine, allspice and sugar, and two men and horses
to carry the wine and other articles to the funeral, also " a man and
horse to notify Isaac Larned and wife at Sherburne to attend the funeral, and a
man and horse to notify John Stearns at Billerica to attend the funeral".
An additional note
comes from the Knight family genealogy, in which Joseph Knight and his wife
Hannah in 1649 sold "a mansion and land" to John Biglo. A map of
early Watertown is shown in Robinson & Wheeler's book, Great Little
Watertown; the land owned by John Biglo appears at the extreme left of the map,
as does the adjoining parcel purchased from Joseph Knight. John Biglo owned
several pieces of property, and in 1686 executed a gift-in-deed, conveying 16
acres and the house thereon "already occupied by my son Samuel" to
Samuel Biglow and wife.
