Wickizer Genealogy

Descendancy Narrative of Conrad Wickizer (8810)

I. Conrad1 Wickizer (8810) His origins are from the Baden Württemburg region. A small village called Möckmühl, located on the Jagst river. Möckmühl is approximately 50 miles or so east of Heidelberg, Germany.
According to references from the International Genealogical Index, his birth date is listed as 1742 and his father's name is listed as Andreas, but this has not yet been proven.

Conrad Wickiser, Sr first appears in 1765 at his daughter Anna Margaretha's christening at the church of Stone Arabia in Palatine, NY. From there, he probably moved south about 1770 to Wilkes-Barre, PA.¹

First appears as original grantee at Wilkes-Barre, PA in 1772¹

Around 1782, the state of Connecticut relinquished it sovereignty over the region. The early tax lists and plat maps from this area are undateable, having been lost in the Susquehanna River flood of 1972¹

He is next listed in official records in 1784, when he appears on a muster roll of Captain John Ritter's company in the "Sixth Class of Northhampton County Militia" serving now in Wyoming, commanded by LT COL Nicholas Kerns. Conrad served as a substitute for William Serfass, mustered in August 5, 1784 and mustered out August 30, 1784; his name is given as Conorad Wickiser.¹

For this service, he received from Pennsylvania a Certificate of Public Debt # 9853, in the amount of £1.0.10, issued in the name of Conrad Wikeser. (Source: Pennsylvania Interest Register, vol. B, page 5, Militia Loans of 1784-1785)¹

His service record is cited in the Pennsylvania Archives, 6th Series, Vol. 3, page 883.¹

Conrad married Rosina probably in Montgomery County, NY. Rosina's surname is unknown. She is probably of German descent. No record survives to my knowledge as of September, 2000. She died probably in Perry County or Delaware County, OH around 1812.

1790 Conrad appears on Luzerne County, PA census as Conrad Wickheizer.

1800 Conrad appears on census as Conrad Workizer. (copy error)

Conrad and Rosina named as grantors to Lydia Wickiser of Hanover Township (deed 8,340) dated April 11, 1801. He lived in Luzerne County, PA and died there on June 24, 1802. Obituary was recorded on June 21, 1802 in Wilkes-Barre Gazette and Luzerne County Federalist.

"Died, in this town on Thursday last, Mr. Coenrad Wickizer"

His probate records were lost in the Wilkes-Barre flood of 1972; what survives in a listing in the Old Registers Index, where his name is given as Conrad Wickizer. His administrators are Andrew Wickizer and W(illiam)? Bennett, his sureties are Jesse Fell and Hugh Connor.

Date of bond: September 2, 1802

Inventory: September 18, 1802

Venue List: March 12, 1804

Accounts: March 12, 1804

This information was published on September 18, 1802.

Rosina Wickizer is last recorded as receiving a legal bond from her son, Jacob in March, 1812. She apparently died between then and 1820. She has not been found in the 1810 census and may have been living with some of her children in Wilkes-Barre or Bradford County.

The origin's of the family could be recalled by James Madison Wickizer in two separate histories of Marshall County, IN:

"Conrad Wickizer emigrated to Pennsylvania from Germany in an early day"

This is the oldest surviving published account of the family's origin. One other county history mentions the family home as "Wittenberg" While there is a town named "Wittenberg" in Eastern Germany, most references to this name in early American history actually mean Württemburg, according to Friedrich Wollmershauser.
