Shellac

Shellac is a hard natural resin produced of secretions of the Lac insects. When dissolved in denatured alcohol the resulting solution has good coating qualities that are tough, abrasion resistant and imparts a high gloss shine. A standard stock solution consists of (1) part shellac to (2) parts denatured alcohol. The stock solution is then further reduced to a 10 to 20% solution for use as a final coating.

Lascaux Retouching Medium (Mowilith 20)

Lascaux Retouching Medium is a 50% solution of Mowilith 20 (AYAB) in ethanol/acetone 7:3. It can be mixed with appropriate powder pigments directly on the palette. Since every pigment has a different binder demand, experience is required to get the right balance between binder and pigments. To dilute the Lascaux medium, it is recommended to use a mixture of ethanol and 10-30% of cellosolve or diacetone alcohol, in order to adapt the drying time of the medium to the requirements of the retouching.

Tinuvin 292

Tinuvin 292 is a liquid UV stabilizer of the sterically hindered amine class. It is a tertiary amine developed for the UV stabilization of industrial coatings and inks, making it an excellent general purpose hindered amine light stabilizer (HALS). Because of its liquid nature, it has the advantage of outstanding compatibility with a wide variety of coating systems, including waterborne and UV curable coatings.

Tinuvin 292 is used in the amount of approx. 2-3% by weight of resin. For best results, It should only be added at the time of use to small batches of varnish that can be use within a few days. Tinuvin 292 is for use within an environment absence of ultraviolet light.

Kraton Rubber

Kraton G series 1657 rubber is used as an additive to low molecular weight resins such as Regalrez 1094. When using Kraton rubber always be sure to use Tinuvin 292. The rubber improves the flexibility of a final varnish, improves scratch resistance and increases the varnishes viscosity which yields a better feeling varnish when applying by brush (low molecular weight resins tend to feel very thin). Kraton G 1657 can be added in the range of 1-3% by weight of resin. One helpful hint, Kraton rubber does not dissolve well in low aromatic solvents, try pre-dissolving the Kraton rubber in a small amount of high aromatic solvent such as xylene.

Incralac - Solvent Based

Incralac is a solvent-based, clear, very high gloss, air-dry coating for copper and copper-base alloys. In an extensive research program initiated by the International Copper Research Association (INCRA), Incralac was found to provide the best protection for copper and brass of all air-dry coatings tested.

Solvent-based Incralac is formulated from a blend of acrylic resins with a solids content of 15%, and a solvent content of 85% (Toluol - 40.1%, Xylol - 40.9% and MEK - 4.0%). Incralac also contains a U.V. absorber and a chelating agent to inhibit under-film corrosion. Coverage is approx. 150 sq. ft./gal. It air dries in 15 minutes, but needs 2-3 days for full cure.

Incralac - Water Based

For many years conservators have favored solvent-based Incralac as their coating of choice for outdoor bronzes. Despite its popularity, Incralac has drawbacks. The solvents that evaporate during application and drying exceed permissible limits in some areas of the country. Therefore, a water-based system has been developed.

Incralac water-based clear coating exhibits all of the good properties of solvent-based Incralac. Two years of outdoor (ongoing) and 500 hours of accelerated weather exposure shows this coating to be as good or better than the solvent-based Incralac, which is the industry standard.

Unlike solvent based Incralac, Water-based Incralac is not for use on surfaces with patina.

Acryloid F-10

Acryloid F-10 is made by Rohm and Haas and is a resin based on a n-butyl methacrylate copolymer. It’s the most soft and elastic of the Acryloids. It’s most often blended with Acryloid B-67 to produce picture varnishes. Acryloid F-10 is only supplied as 40% solids in mineral thinner. Acryloid F-10 produces a clear film with an ultimate hardness of 2-3 KHN.

Acryloid B-72

Acryloid B-72 is made by Rohm and Haas and is a resin based on a ethyl methacrylate copolymer. Acryloid B-72 is by far the most widely used and most versatile of all the acryloid resins. It is suitable as a clear non-yellowing coating used in painting varnishes, consolidating and impregnating mural and oil paintings ground layer, as a fixative for charcoal, chalk and pastel drawings, for consolidation of wood. Regalrez is a low molecular weight synthetic resin which makes a varnish with a refractive index similar to damar and other natural resin varnishes. Varnish made with Regalrez produces a very smooth surface that reduces light scattering at the surface. This results in higher gloss and more saturated colors.

Ceramit

Ceramit is a two-part system that is mixed in a 2-to-1 proportion, 2 parts catalyst to 1 part resin. It can be brushed or sprayed on most any surface. To spray Ceramit, thin resin with Ceramit Thinner in a 1:1 ratio, which is then mixed with the catalyst in a 1:1 ratio. Be sure to fully cure each layer before applying the next coat. Ceramit adheres quit well to both porcelain and ceramic materials. You can apply it in a single coat or build it up in successive layers to obtain a desired result.

Ceramit is available in either regular or high viscosity.

Kreul Flussig Bronzen often referred to as Kreul Gold is by far the best, for the lack of a better term, gold paint we have ever seen. It actually looks like fired on gold straight out of the bottle. Just open the bottle and it is ready to be used, no thinning is needed. It can be applied by hand with a brush or used with an airbrush. Kreul Gold has an amazingly high luster. It’s a great product to repair fine porcelain objects, such as dishes, vases, and figurines. It’s packed in 20ml glass containers and comes in six different colors. Classic-Gold is a light gold with a slight green tint, Baroque-Gold is a basic medium gold tone, Dukaten-Gold is a darker gold that leans more toward an orange tone, Weibgold is white gold that is very bright (similar to platinum), Silver has a very bright aluminum look that is good for toning the gold colors, and Copper is the color of a brand new penny. All of the colors can be intermixed to achieve a desired color.

Polyvinyl Butyral Resins

Butvar polyvinyl butyral resins have a combination of properties that make them a key ingredient in a variety of formulations. Some of these properties for which Butvar is widely used are: outstanding binding efficiency, optical clarity, adhesion to a large number of surfaces, and toughness combined with flexibility. Butvar resins generally are soluble in alcohols, glycol ethers and certain mixtures of polar and non-polar solvents.
