Ultraviolet light & safety infoRmation

Light is a form of electronic energy that moves in measurable waves. The human eye is capable of seeing only a small segment of the spectrum known as visible light; shorter and longer wavelengths are not visible. Therefore, cosmic rays, gamma rays, X-rays, and UV light (which are shorter), and infrared and radio waves (which are longer) are all invisible to humans. To be specific, UV energy radiates between 180 nanometer (nm) to 400nm wavelengths in the narrow region between X-rays and just below the violet end of the visible-light spectrum.
More than 3,000 natural and man-made substances can transform invisible radiated UV energy into longer, visible wavelengths that appear in a variety of colors. These substances react to UV because they’re composed of easily excitable molecules. When UV light strikes one of these reactive substances, this energy, in the form of photons, causes each molecule to rotate violently. As the molecules slow down, they release this radiated energy in longer, now visible wavelengths that appear to the human eye as a glow in the color of the specific activated material. This phenomenon, called fluorescence, is instantaneous and ceases the instant the UV is removed. This fluorescence lets the user detect otherwise invisible traces that could indicate various defects, contamination, and alterations to paintings, glass, ceramic, porcelains, and textiles.
The short wavelength region, also known as far ultraviolet, germicidal or UV-C, extends from 180-280nm. Although it has little penetrating power, short wave UV can cause severe burns to the eyes and skin. When short wave UV affects the eyes, the discomfort is commonly known as "welder’s flash" or "ground glass eyeball". Wear UV filtering eye protection at all times when using short wave lamps.
The long wavelength region, also known as near ultraviolet, black light, Wood’s light or UV-A, extends from 320-400nm. A portion of the population is overly sensitive to radiation in this region of the spectrum and may experience adverse effects. For example, some people experience "blue haze" interference when viewing sources of long wave UV due to the fluorescent effects in the ocular media.
safety glasses Warning
Eye protection is recommended whenever working with longwave ultraviolet light but absolutely essential for anyone working with shortwave ultraviolet light. Our safety glasses protect eyes from harmful UV radiation emitted from UV lamps by absorbing 99.9% of harmful UV radiation up to 385 nm. Another added benefit is the elimination of the "blue haze" effect from longwave UV lamps.

UVL-56
The UVL-56 is a single tube, 6-watt lamp made of light weight molded plastic. The UVL-56 uses a standard tube with a filtered assembly for typical peak intensity of 600 uW/cm2 at 6". It’s available in both the standard longwave and a shortwave model. The UVSL-58 model uses two 6-watt tubes to produce either longwave or shortwave light from the same unit. If you need any of the units listed for use overseas we offer 230 volt models for a slight additional charge (Approx. $10.00). Just specify at time of order.

BL15 UV Wand
The BL15 UV Wand uses a single 15-watt integrally filtered longwave tube to produce an incredible amount of light output. The Wand consists of a 18" clear plastic tube (which protects the UV tube from breakage) with black plastic end caps. This lamp has an extra long 25’ power cord. It is very light weight and easy to hold for long periods of time. The design of the lamp makes it ideal for painting restorers due to its powerful output that allows it to be used in even well lighted rooms. The light produced is a broad beam that can easily illuminate an entire painting with one sweep of the Wand.

All E-Series lamps are made of an anodized aluminum housing. The E-Series lamps come with either integrally filtered tubes or non-filtered tubes with a filter assembly. Integrally filtered tubes provide a brighter UV light that can be more easily seen in natural room light. For maximum fluorescent contrast with the least white light transmission, choose a lamp with a filter assembly. For maximum output, we offer two lamps with two 8-watt tubes.

SB-100P (Formerly MB-100)
The SB-100P is the old MB-100 with a few changes. This high-intensity black light lamp is the most powerful UV lamp you can buy. This lamp puts out a steady 4,800 uW/cm2 at 15" with a spot bulb, or 1,200 uW/cm2 with the flood bulb. We prefer the flood bulb due to its more broad and even light distribution. With this power comes two drawbacks. The SB-100P uses a 12 lb. transformer and the lamp takes 5-10 minutes to get up to full power. The lamp comes complete with 8 feet of power cord (wall to transformer), and another 8 feet of power cord from transformer to lamp (total of 16’ reach). and 8 feet from transformer to outlet plug. Both this unit and the SB-100PX (listed below) comes with UV Safety Glasses.
The SB-100PX is the same unit as above only the length of the power cord from the transformer to the lamp is 20’, giving a total reach of 28’.
