Head Mounted Magnifiers
Optivisor
Genuine Optivisors are know as the best headband magnifier on the market. Optivisors are a precision binocular headband magnifier which permits unrestricted three dimensional vision, thus increasing user efficiency while reducing eye strain. Optivisor is for anyone whose profession or craft requires close accurate work with both hands free. It can be worn over prescription or safety eyeglasses. The prismatic lenses are made of optical glass, not plastic. The headband is fully adjustable. Replacement parts are not readily available anymore. In place of parts, you can now buy a complete Optivisor without a lens and cannibalize it for needed parts (Optivisor Magnifier DA-0). The power and focal distance of each lens is as follows; DA-2 = 1.5X at 20", DA-3 = 1.75X at 14", DA-4 = 2X at 10", DA-5 = 2.5X at 8", DA-7 = 2.75X at 6", DA-10 = 3.5X at 4". The Optivisor Opti Loupe is an additional lens that attaches to either side of the main lens and adds an extra 10X of power.

Frame and Clip-On Magnifier
The Eschenbach Frame and Clip-On Magnifier offers a light weight alternative to the Optivisor. If you don’t wear prescription glasses, the Eschenbach Frame Mounted Magnifier is made up of a pair of light weight metal frames that have an adjustable bridge and temples.
For those of you who wear prescription glasses, the Eschenbach Clip-On Magnifier will clip onto most any pair of frames.
The light weight lenses (purchased separately from the frames) are made of highly polished acrylic and coated for long life. The lenses can be quickly interchanged to adjust the focal range. Three different lens powers are available. The power and focal distance of the 2X lens is 2 times magnification with a focal distance of 10", the 2.5X lens gives 2.5 times magnification with a focal distance of 8", and the 3X lens gives 3 times magnification with a focal distance of 5".

Magnification
Magnification of lenses is measured by a unit called Diopter. Each diopter increases magnification by 25%, e.g. 4 diopter equals a 100% increase above original size. A 3 diopter lens equals an image size of 175% or 1.75 times that of the original size, a 5 diopter lens equals an image size of 225% or 2.25 times that of the original size, and an 8 diopter lens equals an image size of 300% or 3 times that of the original size.
Focal length or working distance is the other important factor that needs to be considered when purchasing a magnification system. Focal length is the distance from the center of the lens to the viewed object. Working distance is the distance from the bottom of the lens to the object when the object appears at maximum magnification without distortion.
It is important to remember that as magnification increases, the focal length decreases. With this in mind, if you need to work under the magnification system with a brush or similarly sized tool, you may not be able to use as high a power of lens due to the decrease in working distance. Therefore, as magnification increases, the magnification lens must move closer to the object to be viewed. In doing this, you are reducing the working distance between the lens and the object. Furthermore, the closer the lens moves towards the object to be viewed, the viewing area becomes smaller. If you are needing to view a larger area, use a lower power lens. But if you are needing to view a smaller area like a ring or coin, a lens with higher magnification is better.
If all this sounds confusing, it can be. Just give us a call and we will be happy to help you out.
Luxo KFM Illuminated Magnifier
The Luxo KFM Illuminated Magnifier is the industry standard for ring-light magnifiers. Recent improvements include: new instant-on switch, ballast housing on back arm, and a more versatile neck assembly for easier magnifier positioning. It is constructed of a die-cast aluminum shade mounted on a heavy-duty spring loaded K-arm. The light source is provided by a 22 watt fluorescent tube. The magnifier is available in three powers of magnification: 3, 5, or 10 diopter primary lenses. Magnification can be increased by adding secondary lenses which are available in: 4, 8 and 10 diopter magnification. Standard finish is light gray.

HEADS: The head or body of the scope is where the eyepieces and the supplement lens (the large lens at the bottom) come together. The two main choices here is weather you need a binocular or trinocular head. You would only chose a trinocular head if you are planing to connect a camera to the scope with for photograph documentation. For all other applications, the binocular head is the one to chose.
STANDS: The choice in stands very greatly, but comes down to two basic types. Rigid arm type stands (one vertical arm) are for use when viewing microscopic slides under high magnification. Universal type stands have two arms (one vertical and one horizontal arm) and are used for viewing three dimensional items such as paintings, objects, etc. under medium magnification. Universal type stands allow you to move the scopes head vertically from a few inches to a foot or more and horizontally up to several feet (great for paintings).
