ld Spanish Days Fiesta Stock Horse Show and Rodeo brings colorful, action-packed family entertainment to Earl Warren Showgrounds where magnificent animals and talented riders preserve and honor the skills of California's Vaquero history. The tack used and the skills displayed trace back to the great horsemanship traditions of the Spanish conquistadors.
The stock horse show, first held in 1924 at an arena in Pershing Park, offers spectators a chance to see the finest local amateur and professional western riders in a variety of events from team penning to reining, from team roping to a special Ranch Horse Class.
Added in 1958 when the show moved across town to the showgrounds, the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association-sanctioned rodeo brings athletes from all over the West. They'll be competing in the classic heart-stopping action of bare and saddle bronc riding, roping, steer wrestling, bull riding and barrel racing. The finals of the stock horse classes are included in the rodeo performances giving these shows a unique local focus. To make sure things don't get too serious, wild cow milking, mutton bustin' and a rodeo clown will round out the show.
Performances run from July 31 through Aug. 3. Stock Horse Show morning events and some afternoon shows are free. Tickets for the rodeo performances are $7 for general admission, $5 for children 12 and under and $15 for box seats. Tickets are available at the door, or call 967-6331 for advanced seating.
