Happy 75th Birthday Luis Goena!
(Actually, Luis told me it was last week, but they had a great party for him last night with many, many dancers, musicians, lovers of fine wine, etc. The dancing began at five and was going strong to a Bulgarin combo when we had to leave.
I ran into a lot of old friends, including Lee Birch, formerly
of San Diego but now living up in the Bay Area. Lee has a group called
"Los Californianos", which plays authentic California ranchero
music from the 18th and 19th centuries. Catch their show when you can. Also last night attended part of a show by the Rincon Ramblers
at the Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Goleta, CA. A mixture
of Irish, folk, bluegrass and other music. Here's a photo of their show
last night, in front of a rapt audience. The show was part of a series promoted by Tom Lee, and titled Songtree Concerts. To find out more re. the Ramblers, stop by the Rincon Ramblers' Website and say hello. [ TOP ]
Last Saturday's show was fun! Special thanks to Dave Richardson, who drove up from the Pasadena area to help out on banjo, and to Michael Lee, who handled concessions & refreshments. Do make a note of Sunday, March 16, 4 - 8 PM, when we'll be performing at The Timers Restaurant, Winchester Canyon Road offramp from US 101, about 13 miles N. of Santa Barbara CA. I remember when it was run by George Velliotes, who doubled by posing as a Russian Colnel and going to schools to give talks about the evils of communism. Back in the 60s, it was the only building you could see, so far North of civilization. Now it seems right in the middle of things - but you can't miss it once you take the offramp.
Hope to see you tonight at our show in Los Olivos. We have a special treat in that banjo picker Dave Richardson will be joing us for the evening. We've lined up a couple of special shows next month, including a free afternoon appearance at the park in downtown Solvang (just off CA Hwy 246 in the Santa Ynez Valley) on Saturday, March 15th from 1:30 to 4:00 PM. Stop by to say hello. Also, we're pleased to announce a new venue in Goleta, CA, "The Timbers Restaurant", where we'll be appearing Sunday, March 16th from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. Note also that I have found an interesting illustration which may help explain the arcane lyrics in Bill Monroe's famous song "Footprints In The Snow". CLICK HERE to check it out. |
