Pete's Bluegrass Weblog - or BlogSubjects: bluegrass, old time music, and vaguely related items. You are invited to join in, as you wish. Email them to us and we'll add your comments, which are very welcome.
Time passes quickly when you're having fun! No time for blogs lately, but here's a little info to update everyone. The San Diego Roots Festival took place this last weekend, and it was its fascinating self. It's a celebration of authentic folk music, done by people who have lived and performed it all their lives. Not a lot of super stars were there, but then the music isn't about stars, it's about people who love to play and show it in their performances. Lou Curtiss, proprietor of Folk Arts Rare Records in San
Diego, has being producing folk festivalks of various kinds for many years,
and this was his 30th. There were six stages, running all day and into
the evening, with blues, old time, cajun, Norteno, bluegrass, western
swing, topical songs, and just plain folk songs all day long. There were
many performers form the San Diego area, but also a few visitors, including
Mike Seeger, seen here with a great-sounding autoharp. More pics and info later.
Well, lots of things happening recently and haven't had much time for web logs. However, we had a great bluegrass get together at the Timbers in Goleta, CA. Thanks to the Southside Bluegrass band and Wildwood for coming to share some music with us. It looks like we'll be doing this again in May, so stay tuned for some special show announcements soon. An event we do not produce, but will participate in is coming up in April 26 - 27th in San Diego. Its the 2003 edition of the San Diego Roots Festival with plenty of performers all day long. The best part is, it's all free! So do stop by if you're in the neighborhood. Check the link above to see the performer list, which will include a new trio we're putting together with Mike Nadolson and Richard Green, as well as a rare west coast appearance by Mike Seeger. Here's a photo from a past festival, one of five stages:
Radio Times Here we are at the Ides of March. Yesterday I was joined by long time friend Stan Tysell in a half hour radio visit with host Jerry Cornfield on KEYT-AM in Santa Barbara. We were pluging some upcoming shows and talking about music on the radio back in the 1930s - 40s. The photo below is not from the studio, which didn't have trees and hedges. Jerry did have a couple of mics for us and a built-in digital applause track. That was nice! In the photo, we're playing in front of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, just filled with culture.
