Fire Station No. 18 / Gaviota
Fall Victim at the Arguello PCX Facility
On December 22, 2004, a demolition worker fell 20-feet from the top of a butane storage tank to the ground below.
Due to the proximity of the accident site, firefighters must provide both rescue and EMS for patients until the contract ambulance company* or helicopter arrives.
*An exception to this is the Lompoc Vandenberg Village area or Cuyama where the Santa Barbara County Fire Department provides ambulance service.
I There are five helicopter providers that can provide emergency medical helicopter transportation including Calstar 7 (Santa Maria Airport), Mercy Air (Camarillo Airport), CHP Helicopter (San Luis Obispo), Santa Barbara County Fire Department (Santa Ynez Airport) and the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department (Santa Ynez Airport). (More SBCO Helicopter Information)
Firefighters work to stabilize injuries and package the patient for transportation.
Trauma nurses from Calstar 7 were flown into the scene to assist with both patient assessment and care.
Responding units included Engine 18, AMR and Calstar 7.
