Handling a Hazardous Materials Incident

Think in terms of hazardous materials incidents that occur at night... Are they scary? Absolutely! Here's a way to remember how to deal with hazardous materials incidents (SCARIE-PM):

S Size-Up: When you arrive on scene, the first thing that has to be accomplished is a size-up.

C Command: Establish Command

A Assistance: Immediately ask for assistance. Remember, you can always return resources.

R Rescue: This is a judgment call that will be based on your experience, situation,  materials involved and your gut feeling...

I Isolate: Isolate the area of concern.

E Evacuation: This could include evacuation in place verses having people move from an area.

P Person Responsible: Locate the person responsible or the fire department liaison to help you.

M Material Identification: When safe to do so, attempt to determine exactly what material is involved safely.
