Gaviota Coast Wind Safety Project

Dynamic Message Signs (DMS)

Traffic Management Centers like the one pictured above receives information and transmits the data onto dynamic message signs.

Dynamic Message Signs have been successfully used nationwide to provide motorists with highway information that includes severe or hazardous weather warnings.

The Dynamic Message Signs can be programmed to display information from a remote computer terminal location, such as the Traffic Management Center in Southern California.

Gaviota Coast Display Message Signs

This proposal focuses on providing both new and existing NOAA Weather Stations to first identify wind events along Highway 101 on the Gaviota Coast. Once these events are monitored, appropriate warning messages would be displayed on the local message signs.

In addition, the use of the Caltrans Highway Radio Advisory System would further augment the emergency information made available for the public to warn motorists and high profile vehicles that gusty winds or dense fog conditions are occurring within the US Highway 101 25-mile corridor that is called the Gaviota Coast.
